Port Vale have secured the upset of the FA Cup fifth round after beating Sunderland 1-0 at Vale Park.
The League One strugglers secured a 1-0 win over top-flight Sunderland, courtesy of Ben Waine’s first-half goal. The boyhood Newcastle fan headed in as a loose ball broke in the box, before wheeling away with a celebration in tribute to Alan Shearer.
Port Vale are bottom of England’s third tier amid a difficult campaign, but are now celebrating qualification to the FA Cup quarter-finals.
It’s the first time in 72 years that the club have reached the last eight of the competition, while it’s Port Vale’s first FA Cup elimination of a Premier League team since upsetting Everton in 1995-96.
Goalscorer Waine outlined his belief that the underdogs ‘deserved’ their win after playing to ‘the condition’s at Vale Park.
“That is unbelievable, I have never seen this place like this,” he said to TNT Sports.
“I know it wasn’t the best game to watch but I think we deserved it. We love this pitch here at Port Vale and we played to the conditions. We got a chance, we took it and then we dug in and defended for our lives.”
