Real Madrid have an overcrowded first-team squad, and some of the youngsters at the club may have to leave in search of regular minutes elsewhere.

For someone like Gonzalo Garcia, despite his obvious talent, he is unlikely to get many minutes ahead of Kylian Mbappe or Endrick next season.

Premier League club Fulham seemed interested in signing the 22-year-old Spaniard, with the Cottagers now managed by Alvaro Arbeloa.

Now, according to Nizaar Kinsella of BBC Sport, the English club have withdrawn from a potential deal for Gonzalo, with the growing feeling that Jose Mourinho wants the young forward to remain at Real Madrid for the new season.

The key factor is Mourinho’s desire to keep the academy graduate. The Portuguese coach has been evaluating his options since beginning pre-season work, and Gonzalo has seemingly done enough to convince him that he can have a role.

That would be a significant opportunity for the striker.

Breaking into the Real Madrid first team is never straightforward, particularly with the attacking quality already available, but Mourinho has always valued players who respond to his demands and compete for their place.

Gonzalo’s profile could also give the coach something different. Having a natural centre-forward available provides greater tactical flexibility across a long season, particularly when rotation becomes necessary.

Fulham move now off the table

Fulham’s withdrawal removes what had appeared to be one possible route out of the Santiago Bernabeu. For now, there is no indication that Gonzalo is heading to the Premier League.

That does not necessarily guarantee he will remain at Real Madrid when the transfer window closes. Other clubs could still show interest, and the squad hierarchy can change once the stars return.

However, if Mourinho has personally decided that he wants to keep the player, Los Blancos have little reason to rush into a permanent sale.

From Gonzalo’s perspective, Mourinho’s confidence would be a major vote of faith, but the difficult work starts now.

Staying at Real Madrid only benefits his development if there is a realistic pathway to minutes.

The coming weeks could see him get opportunities as Los Blancos start playing their friendlies, and it is important he takes that chance.

The 22-year-old made a name for himself performing and delivering for Real Madrid at the FIFA Club World Cup last summer, but he needs to show he can do it under Jose.

With Fulham stepping away, Real Madrid can continue to assess Gonzalo without a knife at their throat, and it remains to be seen how he develops.
