The Premier League has opened an investigation after the Tyne-Wear derby was halted in the second half following a report of alleged discriminatory abuse from the crowd aimed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida. In a statement, the league said racism has no place in the game, offered support to the player and both clubs, and confirmed the incident at St James’ Park will be fully investigated.

The on-field anti-discrimination protocol was applied, and the league will continue working with stakeholders and authorities to ensure stadiums are inclusive and welcoming for all.

On the pitch, Sunderland won 2-1 at St James’ Park to complete a derby double over Newcastle United. They came from behind to claim the points.

Anthony Gordon put Newcastle in front early on. Chemsdine Talbi levelled 12 minutes after the restart.

Brian Brobbey struck in the 90th minute to seal the comeback. It was his sixth of the season and only Sunderland’s 10th away Premier League goal this campaign.
