Sunderland and Newcastle United issue statements after Lutsharel Geertruida racism incident

Sunderland and Newcastle United have issued statements after reported racist abuse towards Lutsharel Geertruida during the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park, condemning discrimination and pledging cooperation with an investigation.
Play was briefly halted in the second half as referee Anthony Taylor consulted both benches before restarting. According to Sunderland Echo, Geertruida reported the incident during the match.
Sunderland said they stand with the defender, praised his courage in raising the matter with officials, and described racism as abhorrent and unacceptable. The club acknowledged Newcastle’s response and said those responsible should be identified and face consequences. It added that football must be safe and inclusive for everyone and vowed to work with the authorities.
Newcastle confirmed they are aware of a report made by a visiting player regarding someone in the crowd. The club reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on discrimination and pledged a full investigation with the relevant authorities to ensure any culprits are found and punished.
The Premier League Match Centre said a full investigation is under way and offered full support to the player and both clubs. It restated that racism has no place in the game or wider society and committed to working with stakeholders to keep stadiums inclusive and welcoming.
