A Premier League review panel has ruled Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey should have been sent off in the 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland Echo reports.

Earlier this month, Brobbey and Cristian Romero chased a loose ball towards goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Brobbey appeared to push the Argentina defender, and the collision left Romero injured and out for the season.

Brobbey had already been booked in the first half, but referee Rob Jones declined to show a second yellow and the forward stayed on.

At its latest meeting, the Key Match Incidents Panel, created for 2022/23 and comprising a Premier League representative, a PGMOL member and three former players or coaches, judged by a 3-2 majority that Jones’ decision was an error, citing a two-handed push deemed unnecessarily reckless.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher argued the outcome should not determine the sanction, saying that without the goalkeeper it would be a minor nudge rather than a dismissal. He added the collision amplified perceptions but he did not view it as a very serious foul.

Ex-Arsenal and Coventry striker Jay Bothroyd suggested defenders often shield the ball and that Romero was blocking rather than controlling it. From a striker’s viewpoint, he felt Brobbey’s shove was to see the ball, an incident he said occurs regularly.
