Sunderland’s outlay places them sixth in the Premier League’s 2025/26 net spend rankings, with a home test against relegation battlers Nottingham Forest up next.

They are licking their wounds after Sunday’s 4-3 loss to Aston Villa. Even so, they sit 11th, four points off sixth with a game in hand, which may yet open a Champions League route depending on the Europa League. Sunderland Echo notes the recruitment drive has brought in Granit Xhaka, Robin Roefs and Nordi Mukiele.

Only Arsenal at €280.30m, Liverpool at €263.40m, Manchester City at €199.52m, Tottenham at €182.90m and Manchester United at €176.50m have higher net spends than Sunderland’s €155.59m. Nottingham Forest are at €111.43m.

Sales of Jobe Bellingham to Dortmund and Tom Watson to Brighton helped to balance the books. Spurs’ position jars with their peril, two points adrift in the relegation zone with five games left, and now favourites to go down despite winning the Europa League last season.

Chelsea’s modest €4.90m net spend reflects heavy buys such as Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro offset by major exits including Christopher Nkunku, Lesley Ugochukwu and Joao Felix. Newcastle are 10th on €102.85m, their sale of Alexander Isak tempered by moves for Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa and Jacob Ramsey. Elsewhere, several clubs posted net profits, led by Bournemouth at €+130.31m.
