Our Premier League Team of the Week celebrates the finest performers from the weekend’s action.

Goalkeeper: Guglielmo Vicario – Tottenham Hotspur

The only player in Tottenham colours to come out with credit after a miserable 1-0 defeat at home to Chelsea. Vicario did his utmost to ensure the Blues did not run away with it, making superb stops from Joao Pedro and Pedro Neto. He made seven saves from inside the box, in a shot-stopping display that ensured embarrassment was avoided.

Right-back: Conor Bradley – Liverpool

Much improved. Arne Slot has faced a problem position at right-back following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s exit, with Dominik Szoboszlai used as an auxiliary option.

Bradley rediscovered his best in the win over Aston Villa, however, bringing brilliant energy for the Reds and remaining sound defensively. The challenge now is to put together a run of games.

Centre-back: Jan Paul van Hecke – Brighton

Front-footed defending on show as he tigerishly won the ball back high up the pitch to create a chance for Danny Welbeck.

As ever, his distribution was on point. He completed eight long passes, including a raking ball to Yankuba Minteh in the build-up to Brighton’s second.

Centre-back: Gabriel – Arsenal

The Player of the Season in the Premier League so far? Arsenal’s big Brazilian is a nightmare to deal with in the penalty box and assisted the opener at Burnley after causing chaos again.

Defensively, he was immense, making nine clearances and winning 100% of his defensive duels (6/6). He might just be the best centre-back in the world right now.

Left-back: Nico O’Reilly – Manchester City

Back in the starting side and full of his usual endeavour going forward. O’Reilly regularly raided forward from his left-back role, and was rewarded with an opening to fire home Manchester City’s third against Bournemouth.

City are unbeaten in the six Premier League games he’s started this season. In the four he hasn’t, Pep Guardiola’s side have lost three times.

Midfield: Ryan Gravenberch – Liverpool

Ryan Gravenberch showed just how important he is for Liverpool upon his return from an ankle issue.

After three games out, Gravenberch was back and produced a dominant performance in midfield against Aston Villa.

His duel-winning and press resistance stand out, though he’s now adding goals to his game too. A deflected strike made it three in the Premier League this season.

Midfield: Moises Caicedo – Chelsea

Leads by example. Moises Caicedo must be a nightmare to play against with his tenacity and it was on show as he snapped into a challenge to create Chelsea’s winner at Spurs.

The Ecuadorian robbed possession to set up Joao Pedro, as the Blues beat their London rivals 1-0. Caicedo is seemingly everywhere at the moment.

Midfield: Declan Rice – Arsenal

Ran the show. His deliveries caused carnage during Arsenal’s win at Burnley, while Rice never shirked his defensive duties with nine duels won as the Gunners recorded a seventh straight clean sheet in all competitions.

A driving force in the league’s best team, he sealed the win with a fantastic header from Leandro Trossard’s cross.

Forward: Lucas Paqueta – West Ham

Despite rumours of unrest, Lucas Paqueta continues to fight for the West Ham cause. The Brazilian was instrumental in a huge 3-1 win for the Hammers against Newcastle, scoring the equaliser with a fierce hit from distance.

He had more touches (77) and attempted more crosses (6) than any other West Ham player, while only four players have scored more goals from outside the box for the Hammers in the Premier League era (5).

Forward: Diego Gomez – Brighton

Having made headlines with a four-goal haul in the Carabao Cup earlier this season, Gomez delivered in the Premier League against Leeds.

The Paraguayan twice ghosted into the box late to fire home, and nearly grabbed his second treble of the season late on. The 22-year-old is growing in confidence and needs more minutes.

Forward: Erling Haaland – Manchester City

Just so clinical. Bournemouth must take some accountability for the naivety of a high defensive line, as Haaland ruthlessly exposed the space in behind. Leave grass for him to run into at your peril.

It’s now 13 league goals this season, just the third time a Premier League player has reached that total in 10 games. Haaland has been responsible for two of them. A robot celebration was fitting for a player who often does not appear human.
