Hull City and Portsmouth meet at the MKM Stadium this Saturday in the EFL Championship, with kick-off at 12:30 live on Sky Sports+.
Hull sit eighth in the table with 22 points but will be aiming to bounce back after a 2-1 defeat to Derby County in their last outing under Sergej Jakirovic.
Portsmouth, currently 20th with 14 points, played out a goalless draw with Wrexham last time out under John Mousinho.
The last meeting between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw.
Joe Collins (To Hull and Back Podcast): That was a weird game!
Against Derby, we probably deserved a point - and with McBurnie on the pitch/better options on the bench we could’ve got all three. That said, a draw would’ve been fair.
But two really daft goals were gifted to Derby, Semi Ajayi getting bullied for the first and Ajayi and Pandur forgetting how to play football/communicate for the second inflicted defeat for the first time since September.
But, a chance to bounce back and a bonus of the return of Mohamed Belloumi - earlier than expected.
Pompey are winless in 4, have scored once in over 6 hours of football and the last time they lost three on the spin followed by a 0-0 draw they were pumped 6-1 by Stoke. That’s a good omen, and it’s not me saying that’s what going to happen btw.
I think we’ll have enough left in the tank to get a good result here, and will be back much stronger after the international break when McBurnie and Lundstram return.
Prediction: 2-1
Freddie Webb (Pompey News Now / PO4cast): Two points dropped for the Blues against an industrial Wrexham that turned up not to lose. Despite Josh Murphy reminding the supporters what they were missing, and glorious chances cropping up, Pompey couldn’t take them and limped to a 0-0 draw.
Players grew into the game with a new back-three formation, but failed to capitalise on their opportunities. With Colby Bishop and Conor Chaplin both struggling to be clinical in front of goal, John Mousinho’s men have now slumped to the lowest scorers in the Championship. Putting the ball in the back of the net has not been an issue for Hull City.
Defying pre-season expectations, their free-flowing and aggressive style of football has seen them in the early fight for a playoff spot. Despite the incredible achievements so far, they have conceded the largest expected goals against ratio -xGA - in the Championship - higher than financially stricken Sheffield Wednesday.
Pompey’s hope will be to make the most of a poor defensive unit, while being strong enough to withstand increased pressure.
