São Paulo prosecutor Cássio Conserino has deemed the Corinthians council’s suspension of internal probes into former presidents an administrative irregularity, notifying the colleague leading a civil inquiry into possible judicial intervention at the club.
The move followed an exchange of sharply worded official letters with council president Romeu Tuma Júnior in recent days, according to Globo.com.
The dispute centres on Tuma’s decision to halt investigations into Andrés Sanchez, Duílio Monteiro Alves and Augusto Melo over alleged misuse of the club’s corporate card. He says continuing inquiries could breach court orders. Only Andrés is barred from contact with club officials.
Conserino argues the restriction on Andrés does not suspend private disciplinary jurisdiction or the club’s duty to investigate. He criticised Tuma’s reading as perplexing and almost puerile, and as an attempt to flout administrative rules and question a court ruling.
Tuma’s reply thanked the concern, set out his case for suspension, and asked the prosecutor to avoid offensive public wording, saying such remarks, amplified by media and social media, had prompted threats and embarrassment he believed were unintended.
On Friday, Conserino reported the matter to the Public and Social Heritage unit. He called Tuma’s note mocking and sarcastic, rejected claims of undue interference, and said his actions reflect the MP’s constitutional oversight role.
He added that inquiries should not depend on political convenience and said the pause breaches the club’s statute, internal rules and ethics code. He argues the situation merits immediate intervention to end inaction. Tuma says he awaits a court decision, and the board wants probes resumed.
