FK Austria Vienna 6-0 FC Red Bull Salzburg Women (H/T:1-0). Goals: Pfattner (17', 65', 89'), Cordes (62'), Schiechtl (69', 77' pen)
While our FC Red Bull Salzburg women's team went close in three matches against top opponents in the ADMIRAL Women's Bundesliga, a difference was evident after the break today. The clear league leaders from Vienna were in the mood for goals, especially after the hour mark, and our very young team ultimately were well beaten.
Pavlovic's side attacked with vigour – with captain Lucia Orkic's making her first start – but the attacking power of the favourites from Vienna was clear early on: as the crossbar was rattled from a misplaced cross. Kenesei's team would pose problems for us, especially from set pieces, as the rest of the evening would show. We suffered our first setback after a throw-in, with Pfattner poking the ball into the net after some penalty box pinball (17').
Our team did attack via Vina Crnoja, but her shot landed on the side netting, while the hosts showed why they hadn't lost in the season so far – as Wenninger & Co. defended solidly until the half-time whistle.
Our team also put in an impressive performance in the second period, with goalkeeper Michaela Fischer skillfully deflecting an Agerholm effort around the post. Then, however, the game went the same way as the weather.
In the pouring rain, Cordes doubled the lead with a clever header (62'), then a Pfattner shot slipped unluckily into the net (65'). Schiechtl maintained her positional advantage on one of the many dangerous corners – 4-0 (69') – and then the defender converted a penalty, although Fischer got her fingertips to it (77'). The team from the capital couldn't get enough, and Pfattner, who was outstanding today, added a 25-yard stunner to round off this disillusioning, yet instructive, evening (89') – that ended 0-6 from our Salzburg perspective.
The score was far too one-sided. The first half was evenly matched, and we executed many of the things we had planned. In the second half, four set-piece goals definitely cost us the game. Games like these are great learning opportunities for our young team; after all, Austria are currently setting the pace – they demonstrated that again today. We can be really satisfied with the first 45 minutes, but there's also the opponents to factor in. They were incredibly strong, especially on set pieces.
