Real Madrid have been linked with a surprise move for Sunderland defender Trai Hume this summer, and it looks unlikely at this stage.
Defensa Central reports that Hume is among right-sided options Madrid are assessing as low-cost cover and competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold. It adds the search follows the expected departure of long-serving Dani Carvajal and values Hume at about €22 million, roughly £19 million.
The report also lists Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong, Feyenoord’s Givairo Read, Brighton’s Matt Wieffer and Monaco’s Vanderson as alternatives, with a rotation signing preferred over heavy spending.
Hume’s stock has risen after another strong campaign for Sunderland. The Northern Ireland international has been a consistent performer under Régis Le Bris, valued for his versatility, intensity and reliability.
He came through Ballymena United and Linfield, making his Linfield senior debut in April 2019. A loan at hometown club Ballymena brought 37 appearances and six goals before he returned to become Linfield’s first-choice right-back.
Sunderland signed Hume in January 2022 on a four-and-a-half-year deal. He made his debut in a 2-1 defeat at Cheltenham Town a month later and became a regular during 2022-23.
He received a contract extension in 2023, then a long-term deal after Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League, keeping him at the club until summer 2030. He also scored his first Premier League goal in this season’s 4-3 defeat to Aston Villa.
