Real Madrid are considering Sunderland defender Trai Hume as a low-cost right-back option this summer, according to Defensa Central.
The report adds that Real are assessing cover and competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold, with long-serving Dani Carvajal expected to depart. Hume is named alongside Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong, Feyenoord’s Givairo Read, Brighton’s Matt Wieffer and Monaco defender Vanderson, with a notional €22 million, about £19 million, fee.
The link appears unlikely at this stage, but it underlines Hume’s growing reputation after another excellent season for Sunderland. The Northern Ireland international has been a consistent performer under Régis Le Bris.
Hume came through at Ballymena United and Linfield, making his senior Linfield debut in April 2019. A loan at hometown club Ballymena brought 37 appearances and six goals before he returned to become Linfield’s first-choice right-back.
Sunderland signed him from Linfield in January 2022 on a four-and-a-half-year contract. He debuted in a 2-1 defeat to Cheltenham Town the following month and established himself as a regular in 2022-23.
He agreed a contract extension in 2023, then penned a long-term deal after Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League, tying him to 2030. This season he scored his first Premier League goal in a 4-3 loss to Aston Villa.
