Régis Le Bris praised Lutsharel Geertruida after the defender impressed on his Sunderland comeback, striking the post with a second-half effort, and he also addressed claims over the player’s future.
According to Sky Sports Germany, a decision has been made that Geertruida will not stay beyond the summer, with Sunderland not set to trigger a €23m option to buy. The report added he would initially return to Leipzig, while a permanent move elsewhere is being explored after initial enquiries.
Geertruida, 25, was recalled with Dan Ballard suspended, his first start since the Tyne-Wear derby win over Newcastle United in March.
Le Bris said it felt the right time to bring him back and that the display justified the call. He noted Luke had three or four consecutive games, did well at times then found it tougher, which opened the door for Lucha.
On the exit claim, Le Bris said he did not know about any decision and that, for now, Geertruida is a Sunderland player who performed well. He stressed there are two games left and that the defender will be with the club until the end of June, after which any decision will be for the player, Sunderland and any other club involved.
