Régis Le Bris hailed Lutsharel Geertruida’s strong return to Sunderland’s starting XI and said the timing of his recall was right.

Selected in place of the suspended Dan Ballard, the 25-year-old made his first start since March’s Tyne-Wear derby win over Newcastle United and hit the post from the edge of the area after the break. According to Sky Sports Germany, a decision has been made that he will not remain at Sunderland beyond the summer, with the club not triggering a €23m option and an initial return to Leipzig expected while a permanent move is explored after early enquiries.

Le Bris said he was unaware of any such development, stressing that Geertruida is a Sunderland player and that his display was a real positive. He noted there are two games still to play and that the defender will be with the club until the end of June.

The head coach added it is too early to discuss next season, saying any outcome will be decided between the player, Sunderland and, in this context, another club.

Explaining the call, Le Bris said the squad’s momentum shaped the decision, with Luke having three or four matches in a row, performing well at times then finding it harder, which opened the door for Lucha, who justified the selection.
