Stade Rennais are emerging as the frontrunners to sign Sunderland striker Eliezer Mayenda in a permanent move this summer.

According to Foot Mercato, the Ligue 1 club are in advanced talks to conclude a deal, with interest rising since Sunderland signalled a willingness to sell and the player sought a new challenge.

The transfer would represent a major profit on the initial €1 million Sunderland paid Sochaux three years ago, with the French club understood to hold a significant sell-on clause. A package in the region of £22 million including add-ons is expected, which would significantly bolster Sunderland’s SCR position into the window and beyond.

Sunderland remain convinced by Mayenda’s potential but accept his wish for more game time after he spent much of last season as third-choice striker. His route to a starting berth on Wearside is not expected to change soon, with Brian Brobbey enhancing his reputation for the Netherlands at the World Cup.

The deal is not yet finalised and other clubs are interested, so the situation could still change. Even so, a permanent exit this summer now appears likely.

If he joins Rennes, Mayenda could bid farewell at the Stadium of Light when the sides meet in a pre-season friendly on August 15th. Both clubs have qualified for the Europa League group stages, so a competitive meeting next season is also possible.
