Adam Wharton’s market has cooled sharply after early expectations that he would become one of the summer’s headline midfield stories. According to Caught Offside, the Crystal Palace midfielder began the window as one of the division’s most coveted young players, yet the landscape has changed as rival clubs reassessed priorities and Palace held firm on price.
There was a point when a genuine scramble looked possible. Tottenham were firmly in the conversation, but after spending £185m on Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, they have now moved away. That matters, because their exit removes one of the most credible competitors for Wharton.
Liverpool also appear to have backed off. The report states the Merseyside club were prepared to go beyond £70m in mid-June, only for “internal changes in recruitment strategy” to pause the move. With that interest fading, Palace’s confidence over keeping the 22-year-old has naturally grown.

Manchester United’s interest has weakened too, with the source explaining they have been put off by the level of fees now attached to this profile of player. Palace are said to want a valuation comparable to Manchester City’s £116m deal for Anderson, a number that has clearly had a market-shaping effect.
For Chelsea, the picture is more nuanced. The key line is that Chelsea remains “engaged”, with contact maintained with Wharton’s representatives as they assess whether a deal could become workable. Even so, the same report makes plain that a quick resolution is unlikely while Palace’s demands remain so high and other major clubs stay on the sidelines.
What once looked like a possible bidding war has slowed into a waiting game. Palace appear increasingly well placed to keep the midfielder, although the situation may yet shift if financial pressures emerge later in the window. For now, the most important detail is simple, Chelsea are still there, but not at any price.
From a Chelsea perspective, this feels like one to watch rather than one to force. Wharton has the profile supporters love, young, Premier League-proven, technically clean, and capable of dictating tempo in midfield. You can understand why the club remains “engaged”.
The encouraging part is that Chelsea have not disappeared from the conversation. In recent windows, that often matters. Deals can look dormant for weeks before conditions change. If Palace soften their stance, or if the market moves around them, Chelsea being in contact could become significant very quickly.
At the same time, there has to be discipline. If Palace are truly holding out for something around £116m, that feels excessive, even for a player with Wharton’s upside. Chelsea need quality additions, but they also need smart ones. Overcommitting on one midfielder would be difficult to justify.
Supporters will probably see both sides. There is excitement in the idea of Wharton growing into the heartbeat of Chelsea’s midfield for years. There is also realism, because this only makes sense if the numbers come down. If they do, Chelsea should be ready. If they do not, staying patient may be the best move of all.
