The Columbus Crew face one of their stiffest tests of the season on Sunday when they visit the Seattle Sounders in a rematch of the 2020 MLS Cup final.
And after a scare, it appears they'll have on of their best players at their disposal.
Columbus initially refused to trigger the $1.2 million buy option agreed with River Plate for right back Andres Herrera, who has become a regular fixture for manager Wilfried Nancy's squad. But now Argentine journalist Cesar Luis Merlo has reported the two clubs have reached a new loan extension agreement.
The current understanding is Columbus and River have a new loan agreement through December 2026 with the same buy option of $1.2 million. It's still not resolved whether the buying clause is mandatory or optional.
It came in handy for the Crew that Marcelo Gallardo, River Plate's manager, values the contributions of current right back Gonzalo Montiel, and doesn't appear to be seeking another during Argentina's secondary window.
This is great news for Nancy as he keeps his starting right back for another year, and for cheap. According to Transfermarkt, Herrera's value is $1.5 million.
The French manager uses a 3-4-3 formation, which gives Herrera extra value to the Crew since he's capable of playing on the end of a back three or in a more advanced wingback role.
The 26-year-old full-back arrived at the team in August 2024. In the year he has been with the squad, he has played 26 games for Columbus Crew in the MLS and Concacaf Champions Cup.
In 2025, he has become a regular starter when healthy after being limited by a shoulder injury for a chunk of his first MLS campaign.
