As one of the biggest clubs in the world, FC Barcelona has always been a dream for many of the sport’s greatest players. Today, it is Julian Alvarez who dreams of joining the Catalan club, but he is not the first to publicly admit to wanting a move while being linked to La Blaugrana.

In the past, many great names of the sport have done the same thing and have eventually completed a move to Barça. As highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, several big names such as Cesc Fabregas, Joao Felix, Philippe Coutinho, and recently Joao Cancelo have all managed to force a move away from their respective clubs to eventually join FC Barcelona.

Fabregas, for instance, was the captain of English Premier League side Arsenal when he publicly admitted that he would love to make a return to the club where he was developed as an academy product:

“I’ve never hidden the fact that I’d like to return… I’m a Barça fan, I’m Catalan, and I’ve felt these colors since I was a child.”

In fact, the situation led to a historic moment during Spain’s World Cup celebrations when Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol put a Barça shirt over him. Eventually, around a year later, he would end up joining them at the club as well.

Similarly, the case of Joao Felix is one that is highlighted as well. In the summer of 2023, as published by journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Portuguese forward confessed his desire to play for the club and how it has been his dream since he was a child:

“I’d love to play for Barça… Barcelona has always been my first choice and I’d love to join the club. It has been my dream since I was a child. If it happens, it would be a dream come true.”

Soon after that exclusive comment, Felix ended up joining Barça from Atletico Madrid as well. While his move was only ever a loan spell at the club, it was still one that he managed to force his way into just to play for La Blaugrana.

The case of former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho is interesting as well, given that neither his club nor coach Jurgen Klopp wanted to let him leave at that point. However, with Barcelona interested, the Brazilian forward ended up submitting a transfer request and that paved the way for his departure.

“I really like Barça, I’m not going to hide it.”

While each case is unique and has its own variable factors attached, the common outcome that they share is that each of those players ended up joining Barcelona. Whether or not Alvarez ends up following that same path to fulfil his dream is yet to be seen, but he has certainly taken the first major step that many of those players from the past did as well.
