This is one in a series of in-fighting incidents within the locker room that has come to the fore, with manager Alvaro Arbeloa also being involved in some verbal altercations with players.

Arbeloa nicknamed the ‘Cone’

In fact, according to Manolo Lama of COPE, some of the Spanish players who are not featuring regularly have been openly mocking Arbeloa from the bench, calling him ‘the cone’.

“Many of the problems stem from the fact that the Spanish players who aren’t playing, when they’re on the bench, keep calling Arbeloa  ‘the cone,'” the journalist and commentator revealed.

He went on to say that players regularly criticise the coach with remarks such as: “Look at that cone, how bad he is, look at that cone, he doesn’t get it.”

Although Arbeloa himself has not heard the comments directly, the information has apparently reached him through members of his coaching staff and kit-room personnel.

It only goes on to highlight the the chaos and absolute disorder currently surrounding the Real Madrid locker room.

The fact that all this is coming out days before the all-important El Clasico makes it only worse, taking the team’s focus away from matters on the field.

As for Arbeloa, the Real Madrid hierarchy seemingly acknowledge now that his appointment in January may have been a mistake. He will almost certainly be stepping down at the end of the season, with Jose Mourinho being touted as the replacement.
