That decision is already proving costly with Robert Sanchez getting sent off against Manchester City, whilst Filip Jorgensen failed to impress against Lincoln in the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea still believe they can sign Mike Maignan

Sanchez is now into his third season as Chelsea’s first choice goalkeeper, and has been heavily criticised during his time at the club.

Chelsea had the opportunity to sign Mike Maignan at the start of the summer, but weren’t prepared to get close to AC Milan’s valuation.

Donnarumma was also on the market, and despite being linked Chelsea didn’t enter the race for the Italy international, and he ended up signing for Manchester City.

However, TEAMtalk have reported the reason Chelsea didn’t go in for Donnarumma is because they believe they can still sign Maignan in the coming weeks.

There have been reports Chelsea are looking to sign Maignan on a free, and he’s available to sign a pre- contract agreement with clubs in January, although the Blues are likely to face increased competition.

Chelsea rate Mike Penders highly

The Blues may not have got a keeper in the summer, but they have high hopes for Mike Penders, who they signed for €20m in 2024.

The 20-year-old is currently on loan at Strasbourg, where he’s made an impressive start and Chelsea are said to be pleased with his progress.

Chelsea reportedly believe Penders is a “special” talent and it’s evident they view the Belgian as the club’s long term number one, it’s likely just a case of when they feel he’s ready to make that step.
