Manchester United suffered a narrow 1-2 defeat at the hands of in-form Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday.

United remain seventh following the result, with Villa now winning 10 on the bounce in all competitions.

Considering the visitors went into the contest without Bryan Mbeumo, Amad, Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, Casemiro, and Kobbie Mainoo, the effort on display will have pleased Ruben Amorim.

The away side enjoyed more possession and also created more chances than the hosts, but unfortunately, they had to come away with zero points to show for their efforts.

United put in commendable effort

Ideally, the Red Devils should have come away with at least a point, but Matheus Cunha missed a glorious chance to grab his brace when he put his header wide from five yards away.

Morgan Rogers scored two worldies in either half to put the tie to bed, while United also lost talisman and skipper Bruno Fernandes to an injury in the first half.

The change to bring on Lisandro Martinez in place of the skipper was an interesting change, with the Argentine’s passing helping United progress play from deep.

Maybe, the experiment will continue, especially if Fernandes fails to recover in time for next weekend’s clash against Newcastle United.

Three bold changes from Amorim

How Amorim manages in the coming weeks will be interesting to see. At least the discipline and diligence shown by the players will be pleasing to note.

Navigating a busy fixture period without your best attacker, wingback, midfielder and defender will make it extra tough for the 20-time English league champions.

But the fact that two academy wonderkids came on for their debuts will please fans, who have been calling out for more academy involvement.

Jack Fletcher came on to replace Manuel Ugarte, who had another game to forget. Shea Lacey replaced Leny Yoro late on as the head coach went all out for the equaliser.

More such bold changes could be in order as Amorim tries to steady the ship moving forward.
