Independiente Santa Fe fans made racist gestures towards Corinthians supporters at El Campín after a 1-1 Copa Libertadores draw on Wednesday. According to Meu Timao, it happened immediately after the final whistle.
Footage posted by the Casal Coringão account showed one home fan mimicking a monkey. Others joined in with insults directed at the visiting end.
No party had issued an official statement at the time of publication. Leonardo Pantaleão, acting chair of Corinthians’ Deliberative Council and away-fan support coordinator, said the club would seek punishment and called the behaviour a crime that must end.
Before kick-off, Conmebol’s O Respeito é Titular campaign against racism and discrimination was promoted. Despite that, such cases have persisted across South American football.
In late April, Cruzeiro, Santos and Flamengo were targeted by Boca Juniors, San Lorenzo and Estudiantes. A Boca fan was detained in Brazil and will face a custody hearing.
Conmebol’s disciplinary code sets a minimum fine of US$ 100,000 for clubs over discriminatory conduct by supporters, rising to US$ 400,000 for repeat offences. Sanctions can also include games behind closed doors, partial closures, entry bans and mandatory anti-discrimination messages.
In 2023, Universitario fitness coach Sebastian Avellino Vargas was arrested for racial injury after making racist gestures towards Corinthians fans at Neo Química Arena.
Corinthians lead Group E on 10 points, while Santa Fe are third on two. The Timão host São Paulo in Itaquera on Sunday at 18:30 in the 14th round of the Brasileirão.
