Guido Rodríguez has rapidly established himself at Valencia after arriving from West Ham for the second half of the season, to bolster Carlos Corberán’s side, but he was omitted when Argentina named their latest squad on Wednesday.

According to Superdeporte, Lionel Scaloni wants to see more before considering him for the final World Cup list, with the midfielder limited to six LaLiga appearances in this second half of the season.

Rodríguez quickly took over the role previously occupied by Pepelu and has brought maturity and presence to the centre of the pitch. That form has made him a regular at Mestalla.

The weeks ahead look pivotal for the Argentine, whose contract also runs out at the end of the season. He must weigh up his future while trying to persuade Scaloni he still belongs to the coach’s inner circle.

He has been called up for the World Cup and for both Copa América titles Argentina have won, and though rarely a starter he has been a trusted option. Limited minutes at West Ham counted against him, but his Valencia spell offers a final opportunity, with the head coach monitoring his progress.
