Juventus 3-0 Sampdoria

Leaders Juventus kicked off the year with a dominant display in their home meeting with relegation-threatened Sampdoria. Valentina Bergamaschi tapped in from close range to get Juventus up and running in the eighth minute. Eva Schatzer then drove a long-distance shot past the outstretched Amanda Tampieri to double Juventus’ advantage.

There was still time left in the first period for Cristiana Girelli to net her ninth league goal of the season, wrapping up all three points before the half-time interval. The only positive for Sampdoria was that they managed to stop Juventus from adding to their tally in the second half. As a result of the defeat, winless Sampdoria remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just four points to their name.

Sassuolo 3-1 Lazio

Lazio got off to the worst possible start after seeing Federica D’Auria sent off in the 17th minute for denying a goalscoring opportunity. Just two minutes later, Davina Philtjens sent a left-foot shot looping over Sara Cetinja to add to Lazio’s miserable start. Elena Dhont then prodded home her first Serie A goal to put the hosts in a strong position.

With her side on the ropes, Noemi Visentin conjured up an equaliser to give Lazio some semblance of hope at the break. However, Valeria Monterubbiano made sure of the three points in the 82nd minute, firing an unstoppable strike into the top corner to seal Sassuolo’s third league victory of the season.

Como 2-0 Fiorentina

Alex Kerr proved to be the hero in Saturday’s clash between Como and Fiorentina. The contest remained goalless until Kerr found the breakthrough in the 78th minute, drilling a thunderous strike off the underside of the bar. Fiorentina’s task was made much together when Agnese Bonfantini was dismissed following two bookings in quick succession. Kerr then put the game to bed in the 90th minute, driving towards the edge of the box before finding the net to score her fourth league goal of the season. As a result of the win, sixth-placed Como have moved to within four points of Fiorentina in fifth position.

AC Milan 6-0 Napoli

AC Milan produced a blistering first half display to sweep past Napoli in Sunday’s home clash. Chanté Dompig required just seven minutes to open the scoring, tapping in at the far post after being teed up by Evelyn Ijeh. After providing the early assist, Ijeh then put own her name on the scoresheet, guiding the ball home after meeting Julie Piga’s knockdown from a deep corner kick.

Milan went on to score three goals in a 12-minute period to take their tally to five before half-time. First, Dompig kept her composure from the penalty spot to score her second goal of the game, before Giorgia Arrigoni drilled the ball into the bottom corner to net her second league goal of the season.  Valentina Cernoia then produced a stunning free-kick to provide the fitting end to the perfect first-half performance. Gloria Marinelli got in on the act in the second period to take Milan’s tally to six, with the result representing their first league win since November 3rd.

Roma 1-2 Inter

Third-placed Roma suffered a narrow loss in Sunday’s home clash with Inter to leave them 10 points adrift of the Serie A summit. Elisa Polli blasted the ball past Isabella Kresche in the 11th minute to punish Roma for losing possession in their own half. The reigning champions quickly hit back through Frederikke Thøgersen, who stroked the ball into the bottom corner after latching onto Benedetta Glionna’s neat layoff.

However, Roma were soon dealt a major blow when Valentina Giacinti was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Katie Bowen. Ten-layer Roma remained level until Annamaria Serturini restored Inter’s advantage in the 55th minute. The former Roma attacker fired the ball into the bottom corner after meeting Haley Bugeja’s deep cross on the full.  Inter held onto their slender lead to claim a fifth win in six league games, leaving them in second place and seven points adrift of Juventus.
