Joshua Zirkzee’s time at Man Utd could be nearing its end, as the Dutch forward grows increasingly frustrated with his lack of minutes under Ruben Amorim. Having joined the club from Bologna in the summer of 2024 for a fee worth around €42.5 million — split between Bologna and Bayern Munich — the 24-year-old arrived at Old Trafford with high expectations.
However, his debut season was inconsistent, disrupted by both a dip in form and a muscle injury late in the campaign. This term, things have deteriorated further. Despite United’s mixed start to the 2025–26 season, Zirkzee has been restricted to just four appearances — all from the bench — totalling a mere 82 minutes.
The Dutchman has slipped behind Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško in the attacking hierarchy, while Bryan Mbeumo’s arrival has only added to the congestion in forward positions. Rasmus Højlund’s departure to Napoli was expected to create an opening, but Amorim has preferred different tactical setups, leaving Zirkzee’s future in question.
In Italy, Roma are monitoring developments closely. Club president Dan Friedkin has been personally involved in discussions at Trigoria in recent days, with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini eager to strengthen his attacking options when the transfer window reopens in January.
Roma’s current forward line remains under review, particularly as they await a clearer picture on Dovbyk’s form and the impact of summer signing Leon Bailey. Gasperini is said to want a versatile striker capable of leading the line or drifting into creative positions — a profile that fits Zirkzee perfectly.
Crucially, the Dutchman is open to returning to Serie A, where he made his name at Bologna. His technical style, positional flexibility, and familiarity with the Italian game make him an appealing target. Gasperini had previously sought to bring him to Atalanta during the 2024 January window, before injuries elsewhere forced the club to prioritise other reinforcements.
With Roma’s finances still tight, a loan move for Zirkzee would represent a realistic option. The forward earns approximately €3.6 million per year plus bonuses at Man Utd, meaning a half-season loan would cost the Italian side around €1.8 million in wages — a figure considered manageable under their current wage structure.
From United’s perspective, a temporary departure could suit all parties. Amorim is focused on reshaping his attacking approach, while Zirkzee seeks regular football to revive his international prospects. Having been left out of Ronald Koeman’s latest Netherlands squad, consistent game time will be vital if he hopes to make the squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Roma are not alone in their interest. Other Premier League clubs, including West Ham United and Everton — both linked through ownership ties to the Friedkin family — have also made informal enquiries. Yet, sources suggest Roma’s appeal lies in the chance for Zirkzee to rediscover rhythm in a league that suits his strengths.
United are unlikely to stand in his way if a suitable proposal arrives, particularly given his current fringe status. For Roma, this could be a low-risk, high-upside signing: a forward with proven Serie A pedigree, tactical intelligence, and a point to prove.
As January approaches, all signs point towards a potential reunion between Zirkzee and Italian football — one that could reignite his career while offering Gasperini the attacking spark his Roma side has been missing.
