Stadio Diego Armando Maradona sets the stage for a mouth-watering Serie A showdown between Napoli and Lazio. Saturday evening’s clash in Naples could determine the fate of the Scudetto with five games to go.
With Inter beating Cagliari 3-0 at San Siro last night, Napoli cannot afford a slip-up here if they’re to maintain slim chances of defending their title. Indeed, Antonio Conte’s men currently trail the runaway leaders by a whopping 12 points despite winning five of their last six league matches.
Last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Parma could come back to haunt Napoli down the title race’s final stretch, though another top-four finish looks like a virtual certainty. Still, the reigning Serie A holders will be out to hold up their end of the bargain and complete their first league double over Lazio since the 2021/22 season following a 2-0 win in January’s reverse fixture.
Avenging that loss won’t change much for the visitors, who are heading toward a disappointing mid-table finish after a rough campaign. Back-to-back winless games (D1, L1) have left the Biancocelesti hovering in mid-table mediocrity, 13 points adrift of sixth-placed Roma. As such, Maurizio Sarri’s side cannot realistically hope to make a late push for European qualification.
Napoli
A gut-wrenching stalemate at Stadio Ennio Tardini ended Napoli’s longest winning league streak this season (5), probably extinguishing any lingering hope of overtaking Inter at the top of the table. Therefore, finishing the 2025/26 season without a single defeat at the Maradona Stadium could be the hosts’ primary target.
Indeed, Napoli started this round as the only Serie A side yet to lose a home match this term (W11, D4), winning their last three league games here by a single-goal margin. That has been a recurring theme for the Partenopei this season, given that they’ve won a league-high 14 outings by virtue of a one-goal margin, highlighting the potential for another tight affair.
Conte wouldn’t mind eking out another narrow victory, especially after his side went winless in five consecutive Serie A meetings with Lazio (D2, L3) before January’s triumph at the Stadio Olimpico. Taking a halftime lead could be decisive for Napoli, considering they’ve won all seven home league matches when leading at the break this season.
Lazio
Fiorentina knocked Lazio down from a five-game unbeaten streak in all competitions on Monday with a hard-earned 1-0 win (W3, D2). As a result, the visitors could be mathematically ruled out of a top-six race at the end of this round, though a potential win in Naples would likely only postpone the inevitable.
Beating Napoli on hostile turf would at least bolster Lazio’s morale ahead of a ‘make or break’ Coppa Italia semi-final second-leg clash against Atalanta next Wednesday. Indeed, Sarri’s team shared the spoils with La Dea in a dramatic 2-2 first-leg draw last month, leaving this heavyweight tie evenly poised ahead of the return fixture in Bergamo.
However, taking three points at the Maradona Stadium could prove easier said than done, with Lazio securing just one win on their last six Serie A road trips (D3, L2). Furthermore, an uneventful first half could be on the cards, given that Lazio’s 16 away league matches this season have produced just six goals before the halftime interval.
Napoli cannot count on captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo and long-term absentees Romelu Lukaku and David Neres. Talented winger Antonio Vergara is also in the pits, but Conte can draw confidence from Amir Rrahmani’s return from injury. Moreover, star playmaker Kevin De Bruyne is likely to make his fourth consecutive league start, seeking his first goal contribution since October.
On the other hand, Lazio will take this trip without Adam Marusic, Nicolo Rovella, and starting goalkeeper Ivan Provedel, who are still recovering from injuries. Despite resuming full training, Mario Gila and Samuel Gigot are unlikely to make the starting lineup. Last but not least, Daniel Maldini remains a major doubt, with Boulaye Dia expected to take his place in attack.
Napoli (3-4-2-1): Milinkovic-Savic; Beukema, Buongiorno, Olivera; Politano, Anguissa, Lobotka, Spinazzola; De Bruyne, McTominay; Hojlund.
Lazio (4-3-3): Motta; Lazzari, Romagnoli, Provstgaard, Tavares; Basic, Cataldi, Taylor; Isaksen, Dia, Zaccagni.
Despite last weekend’s blip in Emilia-Romagna, Napoli could immediately return to winning ways against travel-sick Lazio. Indeed, with the visitors likely to prioritize the upcoming Coppa Italia clash against Atalanta, this may be a perfect opportunity for the Partenopei to bounce back.
