Sunderland winger Simon Adingra is closing in on a loan move to AS Monaco. Fabrizio Romano said on X that a verbal agreement with Sunderland is in place, a €1m loan with a €17m option to buy, with visa and medical to follow.

The Ivorian joined in the summer window but has struggled for minutes at the Stadium of Light and has only one goal so far this season.

Media Foot has also claimed late interest from Saudi Arabia, although a switch to Ligue 1 is understood to be the most advanced.

If Romano’s figures are accurate, Sunderland would receive around £866,000 for the initial loan and a further £14.8 million if the transfer is made permanent.

The latest developments come amid debate in Ivory Coast over Adingra’s trajectory. Sport News Africa quoted Alex Payne of La Nouvelle Chaine Ivoirienne saying the winger is technically gifted but lacks explosiveness and defensive intensity required in the Premier League, and that a move to a less physically demanding league such as Belgium, France or Germany could help him regain form.

Payne pointed to his strong season with Union Saint-Gilloise that earned an Africa Cup of Nations call-up, suggesting a change of environment could aid his development.
