According to El Correo, Unai Simón, Laporte, Vivián and Nico Williams are on Spain’s 55-man provisional list for the 2026 World Cup, placing four Athletic players in contention.
FIFA’s deadline for submitting prelists fell on Monday 11 May. Spain are not expected to publish theirs, with the final 26 to be confirmed on 25 May after the last league round for a tournament hosted in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Simón, Laporte and Nico look close to certainties, despite Nico sustaining an injury in recent hours. Vivián has featured regularly under Luis de la Fuente and was part of the Euros win in Germany, but he has missed recent squads and appears less likely to travel.
This year the prelists are binding. Under FIFA rules, if an injury occurs before Spain’s opener, only players included in the initial list, capped at 55, can be called up.
Spain begin their campaign on 15 June against Cape Verde.
