Chris Wilder made his return to Sheffield United just months after being sacked by the club's new owners
Will Still has criticised Sheffield United’s recent managerial changes following the dismissal and return of Chris Wilder.
The 57-year-old departed the Blades at the end of the previous campaign after guiding the club to defeat in the play-off final.
Ruben Selles was appointed as his replacement, but the Spaniard only lasted five league games before Wilder was brought back to take charge of the first team squad.
This is his third stint at the helm of the Yorkshire outfit, with Sheffield United now looking to get out of the relegation zone and climb the Championship table.
Selles had overseen five defeats in five games, before Wilder’s side finally achieved a victory last weekend against Oxford United in their seventh fixture of the term.
Still has criticised Sheffield United for the situation involving Wilder, claiming it is a sign of the times of modern football and that managers aren’t given enough time.
He related the problem to the criticism he’s faced since arriving at Southampton, suggesting that a bad start to life at a club does not make them a bad manager.
"Honestly, I think it's completely ridiculous,” said Still, via the Daily Echo.
“Unfortunately, that's just the way football works these days.
"It's like our situation as I know people are questioning it.
“I don't think it makes me a bad manager, I don't think it makes me a bad person.
"And I'm not a stats man, but if you look at all the stats then they show we're doing something right, we're just not quite making it click, but it takes time.
"There are examples of clubs where they've been patient, they've given people a bit of time with that trust and faith and I think it's worked out.
"It's just the world we live in, isn't it? It's modern football.”
Still believes that Wilder didn’t deserve to be sacked at the end of last season, and that is proven by the fact he’s come back after just five league games: “Chris would have been majorly disappointed to get that news at the end of last season.
"We all know how football works and how ruthless and sad it could be.
“He didn't deserve it at all.
“It's turned around and proven him right by bringing him back in.
"He's a hugely experienced manager, he knows exactly what he's doing and how well he sets up his teams, so it'll be a big test.
“It’s a big challenge for us."
Southampton will go into Tuesday evening’s clash against Sheffield United with just four points separating the two teams.
The Saints earned a draw at the weekend against league leaders Middlesbrough, but had their 1-0 advantage wiped out with a 77th minute equaliser from Kaly Sene.
The result left Still’s side winless in their last six fixtures in the Championship., which has put them 19th in the table after seven games.
Southampton will travel to Bramall Lane this evening for a 7.45pm kick-off before their clash against Derby County at the weekend.
Still hasn’t had the best starts himself at Southampton, with these comments revealing the pressure he’s already feeling with the Hampshire outfit.
It’s good to see managers standing up for each other, and there are a lot of instances of coaches not being given a chance at clubs because of a poor start.
These comments are applicable to his situation, and it is a defence of the work he’s doing at St. Mary’s, suggesting that more time is needed for him to get the required results.
A win is sorely needed though, as supporters will lose patience if they again fail to get all three points in either of their next two fixtures before the international break.
