Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby brings a fresh audit of firepower as Sunderland chase a league double over Newcastle United and the chance to move above them in the Premier League.
According to Sunderland Echo, expected goals data places Newcastle seventh on 1.57, while Sunderland are 18th on 1.15. Manchester United lead on 1.78, with Liverpool and Manchester City next, and Burnley are bottom on 1.08.
Much has been made of both sides in the final third this season, with Newcastle still searching for the right blend after the summer departure of Alexander Isak. For Sunderland, creating regular clear chances has proved difficult in their first year back in the top flight.
The December meeting at the Stadium of Light underlined how tight this fixture can be. An own goal from club-record signing Nick Woltemade settled a contest of very few openings, with only three shots on target between the teams and a further three off target.
Derbies on Wear and Tyneside are frequently decided by fine margins. Sunderland have had the better of recent Premier League meetings and will hope to keep that edge when the sides walk out at St James Park on Sunday afternoon.
