In a recent post on X, respected journalist David Ornstein claimed that Sunderland are set to sign Thomas Meunier on a free transfer this summer. It has been mentioned that the Black Cats are on the verge of recruiting the Belgian defender on a two-year deal this off-season.
Meunier enjoyed a good run of form at the French club in the previous campaign when he produced a series of impressive displays for them in Ligue 1. The 34-year-old made 35 appearances for Lille last season, finding the back of the net two times and picking up three assists across all fronts.
The Belgian talent is currently among the most experienced full-backs in his homeland. Hence, the Black Cats have done well to lure him to the Stadium of Light this off-season.
Furthermore, Meunier is a free agent at the moment, which makes him an affordable option for Sunderland to pursue in this summer transfer window.

Meunier loves a tackle and can read the danger well to secure possession back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot and can even engineer some inviting chances for his teammates from the right flank.
The Belgian talent can even contribute by scoring and creating a handful of important goals going forward. Meunier is primarily a right-back but can also fill in as a right-sided wide player if told to do so by his manager. However, only time will tell whether he can cope with the physical side and high intensity of the Premier League if the Black Cats manage to recruit him later this year.
We can expect Meunier to add more quality and depth to Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris’ attack. He has what it takes to fight for a regular first-team spot at the Stadium of Light next season.
At 34, Meunier is past his prime but might still have a couple of good years left in him to play at his best. Thus, he would be a good choice for the Wearside club to pursue in the short term.
