Sunderland close on Thomas Meunier as 34-year-old due for medical after two-year agreement | OneFootball

Sunderland are close to landing Belgium international Thomas Meunier, who is due on Wearside for a medical in what would be their first senior signing of the summer.

Sunderland Echo understands Meunier is expected in today after a two-year agreement with the 34-year-old right-back. Provided there are no late complications, he is expected to sign within the next 24 hours.

Meunier is available on a free transfer following the expiry of his Lille contract, having spent the 2025-26 campaign with the French club. His arrival would add significant experience to Régis Le Bris’ squad ahead of the club’s return to European football.

The defender has represented Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Club Brugge, Trabzonspor and Lille. He boasts Champions League experience and more than 60 caps for Belgium. He began further forward before cementing himself at right-back, with attacking output still a feature.

Trai Hume and Nordi Mukiele are established on the right, and Meunier would give Le Bris another experienced, tactically flexible option. Hume has also been used higher up the pitch, so the Belgian could increase variety within the Black Cats’ system.

The medical is the final major hurdle before the deal can be completed and announced. Sunderland aim to conclude the move swiftly as preparations continue for their opening pre-season friendly at York City.
