Sunderland Women held Newcastle United to a derby draw at the Stadium of Light, a result with implications for promotion and the region.
Katy Watson's first-time volley put Sunderland ahead in the first half and they led for about an hour. Sunderland Echo notes that Mel Reay's side were tireless without the ball, winning duels and keeping Newcastle away from their box despite long spells without possession.
A 15-minute lull in the second half saw Sunderland drop deep and invite pressure, and the visitors equalised. In stoppage time a long throw was flicked on and Eleanor Dale headed over, so the points were shared.
Sunderland had lost all three league derbies since promotion to WSL Two. Newcastle's PIF-backed investment has redrawn the landscape, underlined by Jordan Nobbs starting in midfield and fellow former Lioness Demi Stokes among the substitutes. Sunderland were underdogs but this was a clear step forward.
Newcastle dropped points they badly needed and are now three points off the promotion play-off with three games left. For Sunderland it was about pride and halting the recent derby slide, and it might help keep this fixture on next season's slate.
Given the backing, it appears a matter of when, not if, Newcastle become a Super League club. Sunderland have spent much of the past year exploring potential external investment to bridge the gap. Watson impressed again and 19-year-old Chloe Paxton excelled at centre half on full debut, with the academy and out-of-possession structure still central to progress.
