Sunderland have issued an update to fans after 65 tickets for the recent Tyne-Wear derby were cancelled and put back on sale. The club said in a statement that it had acted over an exceptional and serious instance of ticket misuse.
The cancellations followed the discovery that a purchaser had breached away ticket policies. The update was shared with the Red and White Army on social media on Tuesday afternoon after concerns were raised by supporter groups.
The investigation found multiple unauthorised uses of supporter accounts, in some cases without the account holders’ knowledge. It also identified tickets being used by individuals other than the eligible purchaser, contrary to ticketing rules.
The inquiry indicated this accounted for more than 50% of some group purchases. Those involved have acknowledged the misuse and appropriate action has been taken.
Sunderland recognised that some fans were affected through no fault of their own and acknowledged the disappointment caused. It will continue working with the ticketing supporter subgroup to review and improve processes so away tickets are allocated fairly to genuine supporters.
