Sunderland ‘make enquiry’ for Óscar Mingueza as Celta confirm exit

According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland have made an early enquiry for Spain defender Óscar Mingueza, who will leave Celta Vigo as a free agent this summer.

The La Liga club listed the 27-year-old among this summer’s departures on Tuesday, and the report added that Atalanta and Como have also moved early.

Mingueza came through Barcelona’s academy and has four Spain caps. Primarily a right back, he is comfortable on the left and at centre back.

Sunderland need defensive reinforcements after Dennis Cirkin’s exit, while Lutsharel Geertruida’s future remains unresolved. The club did not trigger their option to buy him and, with rival interest expected, a return to Wearside is far from certain.

Mingueza made 34 La Liga appearances last season, plus 11 in the Europa League.
