Sunderland forward Ethan Moore says he has moved on mentally and physically from the knee injury that derailed his early career, as he builds momentum on loan at National League side Gateshead.

He joined in January and reflected on his progress after Tuesday’s 3-1 win over York City. “I am definitely moving towards where I want to be,” he told Sunderland Echo. “I know my knee is strong now.”

Moore suffered a serious knee injury in March 2023 and spent almost two years in rehabilitation. He returned in August for Sunderland’s under-21s, featured 17 times before the turn of the year, then switched to Gateshead, where he has seven appearances.

The versatile forward is into the final weeks of his Sunderland contract and wants to stake a claim. “I just want to play as many minutes as I can and show everyone what I can do. I want to get myself into the starting line-up.”

Gateshead have surged from 11 points adrift six weeks ago to outside the drop after only two defeats in their last 11, and host Yeovil Town on Saturday. With Non-League Day bringing reduced ticket prices by up to 20% and a 2,000 target, Moore added: “If you come down you’ll see good quality. We need that support here.”
