Sunderland midfielder Noah Sadiki has explained his decision to choose DR Congo over Belgium as England await at the World Cup.
“My choice of DR Congo did not go down well at home, and my parents did not understand why,” he told Olympics.com earlier this year.
“But like I always say, this was, as is, a deeply personal choice.” “We are here because we want to be here.”
Born in Belgium, Sadiki came through Anderlecht’s academy and played for the country up to under-20 level. Given a senior debut by Vincent Kompany, a Belgium future seemed likely. He committed to DR Congo in 2023 and has since become an important part of the Leopards.
His remarks have resurfaced as DR Congo prepare to face England, where the Sunderland midfielder could meet several Premier League names. Signed from Union Saint-Gilloise last summer, he has quickly enhanced his reputation on Wearside.
“There will be setbacks along the way, but you have to grit your teeth and see it through,” he said. “That’s why I’m one of the first of my generation to openly choose Congo - because I know it could open doors for others.”
