Sunderland return to Premier League duty against Nottingham Forest on Friday night at the Stadium of Light, with Dan Ballard restored to the XI. Trai Hume also starts at left back, replacing Reinildo, after scoring off the bench at Villa Park, as two changes from the 4-3 defeat at Aston Villa.

According to Sunderland Echo, Omar Alderete retains his place despite being withdrawn in the second half at Villa Park, after Régis Le Bris said on Thursday that several players had recovered from a virus, Reinildo among those affected. The head coach added the group had been on the limit last week but should be fine for the game.

Le Bris noted the bench now offers more options and that introductions can influence matches. He pointed to Hume and Wilson as recent examples.

Sunderland XI: Roefs, Mukiele, Ballard, Alderete, Hume, Xhaka, Sadiki, Diarra, Rigg, Le Fee, Brobbey. Subs: Ellborg, Geertruida, Reinildo, Mayenda, Isidor, Talbi, Jones, O’Nien, Cirkin.

Le Bris is hopeful of having Jocelin Ta Bi, Bertrand Traore and Nilson Angulo back over the next fortnight. Nilson and Berto are close to part training next week, probably a bit with the squad, and Jocelin has started sessions and might go further next week if he continues to feel good.
