Sunderland host Nottingham Forest at the Stadium of Light on Friday, with Vitor Pereira’s relegation-fighting side in town. Sunderland Echo highlights five who have played for both.
Danny Collins, Fans’ Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009, made 149 Sunderland appearances and won two promotions. After Stoke and loans to Ipswich and West Ham, he captained Forest and featured 71 times.
Jack Colback came through Sunderland’s academy, making 135 appearances and scoring in a 3-0 derby win at St James’ Park in 2014. He crossed to Newcastle four months later, then had two loans at Forest before signing permanently in August 2020, making 66 appearances.
After joining from Waterford United, Daryl Murphy scored one in 18 in his first Sunderland season, hit 10 in 38 the next, then moved on via Celtic and Ipswich to Tyneside and finally to Forest in 2017 for two seasons. Nicklas Bendtner arrived on loan in August 2011, saying he would not play for Arsenal again after a car crash, and scored eight in 30 before moves to Juventus and Wolfsburg. While at Wolfsburg he said publicity over a psychological test left him labelled a psychopath, then a two-year Forest deal brought two in 17 and a swift exit.
Lewis Grabban scored 12 in 20 on a five-month Sunderland loan in 2017-18 before Bournemouth recalled him and loaned him to Aston Villa. He joined Forest the next summer, scored 54 in 144, and since August 2024 has been a Professional Development Phase coach at the club.
