Newcastle United defender Sven Botman has had surgery on a facial fracture after a collision with Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey in Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.
On Monday, the club said in a statement that the operation was successful, he was withdrawn under concussion protocol in the second half, and he is not expected to be sidelined for long, with hopes of featuring again in the closing weeks.
Botman was substituted in the 55th minute of the defeat to Sunderland.
Well wishes for a swift recovery accompanied the update.
The announcement followed a tough week for Newcastle, who were beaten 7-2 by Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday.
