Szoboszlai urges Liverpool to fix set-piece woes | OneFootball

Dominik Szoboszlai has called on Liverpool to improve their defending from set pieces after the Reds squandered a two-goal lead in a 4-2 pre-season defeat to Leeds United.

Andoni Iraola’s side looked on course for victory before conceding four unanswered goals, with two of Leeds’ strikes coming from set-piece situations. Reflecting on the result, Szoboszlai admitted Liverpool must address the issue before the Premier League campaign begins.

“Now we know we conceded two goals from set pieces, we have to take care of them more,” the Hungary international told LFCTV.

“Last season was one where everything started to be really important on corners, long throws. We have to take care of it, or next season will be the same as last season.”

Liverpool’s vulnerability from dead-ball situations proved costly on several occasions during the previous campaign, and Szoboszlai believes greater concentration and responsibility from every player is needed to prevent a repeat.

“Set pieces, everyone has to do their job, or we won’t concede,” he said.

“We’re also human beings, we are allowed to make mistakes. We have to react, that’s important.” Despite the disappointing result, the midfielder stressed there is still time for the squad to iron out their defensive issues before the competitive season gets underway.

“We have two games more before the season starts.”

Liverpool will now use their remaining pre-season fixtures to refine their preparations under Iraola, with defensive organisation likely to be a key area of focus following the collapse against Leeds.
