Thank You, Andy Robertson

At a club like Liverpool FC, it isn’t easy to make a genuine mark that will last for generations. Youngsters who started supporting the team during the Jürgen Klopp era will struggle to understand the idea of brilliantly talented players in every position not really being the norm. In the case of Andy Robertson, though, he will go down as one of the best left-backs that have ever pulled on the Red shirt, with many arguing that he will be thought of as the best.

That is some achievement, even before you get into a discussion around his cost and the fact that few thought much of him when he was brought in from Hull City in the July of 2017.

A Tremendous Talent

With a player like Andy Robertson, who arrived from a relegated Hull City side with a price tag of around £8 million, it is easy to suggest that his footballing ability was less than it actually was. He understood the football club from the moment that he arrived, perhaps recognising a similarity between Scousers and the people from his hometown of Glasgow. More than anything else, both sets of people respect hard work and effort from those who are lucky enough to represent them.

The fact that he gave everything every single time he took to the pitch for us is not the reason he was successful, however. ‘Robbo’, as he has become known, is a talented left-back with the ability to get up and down the line thanks to his brilliant engine. He has been able to deliver a top-class ball into the box throughout his career, marrying that to being a switched-on defender who knows how to tackle and what needs to be done to close down space. His talent is, in my opinion, undeniable.

Part of Why We Won It All

The problem for opposition defences during the Jürgen Klopp era was that there were threats from all over the pitch. Yes, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané earned the headlines as being such a thrilling and exciting front three, but if defenders felt as though they had them boxed off, then Andy Robertson arriving down the left or Trent Alexander-Arnold coming in from the right would give them something else to think about. Without Robertson’s threat and guile, we would definitely have scored fewer goals.

There is now an assumption from many that the 2019-2020 title win was inevitable for Liverpool. During our game against Aston Villa, however, there was a moment when Villa were winning and so were Manchester City, putting them above us in the table. Andy Robertson scored the equaliser that came before the Sadio Mané winner, which secured a vital three points. He has been a crucial part of the reason why we’ve been so successful over the past decade, for which I will always be incredibly grateful. Thanks, Robbo.
