The complex scenario that could still bring Julian Alvarez to Barcelona

Barcelona’s interest in Julian Alvarez is neither new nor impulsive. Inside the club, it is widely accepted that the current financial reality makes any immediate move impossible.

Yet despite those limitations, Barça continue to keep the Atletico Madrid forward firmly on their long-term radar as a potential successor to Robert Lewandowski in 2026.

It is said that Alvarez fits the profile Barcelona are increasingly prioritising.

He is young enough to justify a long-term contract, experienced at the highest level, and would be considered a fully amortisable investment rather than a short-term fix.

It is not that easy

That said, the operation is far from straightforward.

This is because Atletico Madrid’s recent change in ownership has further complicated matters.

They are no longer a club under financial pressure, which significantly reduces the likelihood of Atletico being forced into negotiations. On paper, Barcelona have very little leverage.

However, Barça believe certain conditions could shift the balance. One key factor is the player himself.

What is that condition?

According to SPORT, if Atletico were to end the season without a major trophy, it could strengthen the player’s desire to seek a new project where competing for titles is a constant expectation.

In such a scenario, Alvarez pushing for a move would be absolutely essential.

His release clause stands at an unreachable €500 million, and his contract runs until 2030. Without the player’s active involvement, any negotiation would be dead on arrival.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are confident their situation will look very different by then. The club expects to close the current season with around 60,000 spectators at Spotify Camp Nou.

That return will dramatically boost matchday revenue. Combined with a full return to the 1:1 financial rule, which the club is already approaching, Barça expect to regain genuine spending power.

Even so, a deal of around or above €100 million would almost certainly require a major sale.

Lewandowski’s eventual departure would free up a substantial salary, but that alone would not be enough. One high-profile exit would likely be necessary to make the numbers work.

There are many moving parts and no guarantees. Yet despite the complexity, Barcelona have not closed the door.
