The scenario: It will be the fourth-placed team from last season versus the 14th, who were always above the drop zone from Matchday 11 onwards. Borussia Dortmund have won on Matchday 1 in each of the last 10 seasons, but that run included only one away game – in Wolfsburg in 2017. That's a historic Bundesliga record! St. Pauli have been waiting since 1989 for a Bundesliga victory over BVB.
Home/away: Borussia Dortmund won only around one third of their away games last season (six in total), but took 10 out of a possible 12 points from their last four away matches. FC St. Pauli lost more than half of their home games last season and picked up only 14 of their 32 points in total on home turf (three wins, five draws and two defeats).
Am 1. März 2025 steht ein 0:2 auf der Anzeigetafel im Stadion am Millerntor. Serhou Guirassy und Karim Adeyemi haben die Treffer für den BVB erzielt.
Head-to-head record: Borussia Dortmund do not have a better record against any other current Bundesliga club: 13 wins and only two defeats in 18 meetings. St. Pauli's last Bundesliga win against BVB came almost 36 years ago: On 30 November 1989, they won 2-1 at the Millerntor thanks to goals from Andre Golke and Dirk Zander (Andreas Möller had made it 1-0). The Black & Yellows have won the last six away games by a combined scoreline of 13-2. St. Pauli have not lost to any other Bundesliga side more often than BVB (13 times), and have not conceded more top-flight goals to any other team either (37). However, the then second-tier team won 2-1 in the DFB-Pokal on 18 January 2022.
Statistics: St. Pauli failed to find the net in 11 of their 17 home games last season. There had only previously been one team in Bundesliga history that had failed to score that many times in a season. That was the legendary Tasmania Berlin in the 1965/66 campaign. Only two clubs scored more goals than Borussia Dortmund in 2024/25 (71). Only Frankfurt scored more counter-attack goals than BVB (nine), while only Bayern turned opposition possession into a goal for themselves more frequently than the Black & Yellow (18 times).
Biggest away victory: The first of their 18 top-flight meetings to date was the highest-scoring. BVB found themselves 5-0 in front at the Millerntor on 10 September 1977 thanks to goals from Siggi Held, Lothar Huber, Mirko Votava and an Erwin Kostedde double in the 49th and 50th minutes. Then St. Pauli pulled it back to 5-3 within four minutes (65-69), before Wolfgang Vöge made it 6-3 and sealed the win in the 78th minute.
