A great goalkeeper can be every much a difference-maker as those at the other end.
Several sides signed new number ones in the summer, with Manchester United, Manchester City, and Bournemouth among the Premier League teams to secure shot-stoppers.
We’ve attempted to rank the five best goalkeepers in the Premier League right now.
It’s not time to put some respect on Jordan Pickford’s name, it’s overdue.
Nine consecutive clean sheets for England and more than a year without conceding for the Three Lions has made headlines this week, but Pickford has been performing consistently for a long time.
Ask any Evertonian and they’ll tell you the 31-year-old has been largely responsible for keeping the club afloat in the Premier League in recent years.
Emiliano Martinez may not have reached his highest standard of late, but the Argentine remains one of the league’s biggest presences.
In addition to helping Aston Villa emerge as European regulars, Martinez has enjoyed incredible success with the national team. He’s a two-time winner of The Yashin Trophy, has won three major tournaments, and recorded 40 clean sheets in 57 caps for the world champions.
Manchester City capitalised in the summer to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma for a knockdown fee. The Italian man-mountain was deemed free to leave Paris Saint-Germain after failing to agree a new contract, just months after helping the club secure a maiden Champions League triumph.
Donnarumma does not appear to be the usual Pep Guardiola goalkeeper, but he’s a shot-stopper in the traditional sense. The number one priority of a goalkeeper is to keep the ball out of the net, and few do it better than the 26-year-old.
David Raya has gone from strength to strength in an Arsenal shirt, with the Spanish shot-stopper the guardian behind arguably Europe’s best defence.
Raya’s reactions can be cat-like, with his catalogue of saves since moving to North London one to rival any goalkeeper in the game. With elite distribution and cool under pressure, he’s one of the best in the business.
For many, Alisson Becker has held the crown as the Premier League’s best goalkeeper for some time. The Brazilian has been a big part of Liverpool’s modern success, offering a confidence that transmits forward through the Reds’ ranks.
An all-time great in the Premier League, he’s perhaps entering the conversation overall among the goalkeeping community.
Having just turned 33 earlier this month, Alisson might still be entering his best years. For the Premier League forwards who have struggled to find a route past the brilliant Brazilian in recent seasons, that’s a scary thought.
