Chelsea’s battle with Borussia Dortmund to sign winger Jamie Gittens began long before the Club World Cup, and is still dragging on now despite most sources having reported it as a done deal by now.

Sebastian Kehl, the German club’s director of football, had quotes come out today which hint that there are still important details to be agreed between the two clubs, despite things obviously being very close to done.

“We have given Jamie [Gittens] permission to hold talks with another club, which are still ongoing. There are still things to be clarified. Things are moving,” he said.

In other comments to Sky Germany the sporting director had said that “things are a bit in flux,” and that there’s “no decision yet,” despite Gittens already having completed a medical with Chelsea.

Chelsea keep up intense summer tempo

Chelsea are moving aggressively this summer so far. Liam Delap was a done deal right after the season finished, and both Gittens and Joao Pedro look just days from being done. After that comes a defender – and a whole lot of sales.

Why Chelsea still want to do Gittens deal sooner rather than later

The race for Gittens is less intense because he has featured for Dortmund at the Club World Cup already, meaning that even if Chelsea were to sign him ahead of the 3rd July deadline for the knockout rounds he still wouldn’t be able to play for them anyway.

There is still some incentive to get him on board, as he would be able to train with his new teammates right away. That could prove important as there won’t be a normal preseason this year.

While not yet done, things don’t sound far off.
