Former Netherlands star Rafael van der Vaart believes Liverpool should consider selling Mohamed Salah to avoid future problems.

Van der Vaart questions Salah’s role

Former Rafael van der Vaart has shared strong opinion on Mohamed Salah suggesting that it may be in Liverpool’s best interest to move on from the Egyptian forward.

Speaking to Sky Bet on Saturday, Van der Vaart said Salah has lost some of his speed and no longer attacks defenders the way he once did.

He added that this change is natural due to age especially for attacking players.

Age and expectations

Van der Vaart explained that age affects forwards more than defenders. He used Virgil van Dijk as example saying the impact of age is less visible for center-backs compared to attackers like Salah.

He also pointed out that when coach expects certain things from player and those demands are not met, it is normal to leave that player on the bench.

However Van der Vaart believes Salah’s status makes this situation more complicated.

Pressure on Arne Slot

According to the former Real Madrid and Tottenham midfielder benching Salah can create constant pressure on head coach Arne Slot.

He said every press conference would focus on why Salah is not starting which could become distraction for the team.

Van der Vaart added that Salah had already shown frustration in December when he was left out of Champions League match against Inter.

Although the winger later returned to the starting lineup after the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, questions about his role remain.

Summer exit suggested

Van der Vaart concluded that summer transfer could benefit both sides. In his view Liverpool could avoid ongoing tension while Salah could find new challenge where expectations are clearer.
