Thomas Meunier ‘to sign’ for Sunderland after snubbing Valencia | OneFootball

Thomas Meunier has walked away from Valencia’s proposal, with The Athletic reporting he arrived in Newcastle on Tuesday morning for a medical and is expected to sign for Sunderland.

The 34-year-old right-back had verbally agreed a one-year deal with an optional extra year at Mestalla after leaving Lille weeks earlier at the end of his contract.

While with Belgium at the 2026 World Cup, he was due in Valencia this week to sign and take his medical before resuming his holidays.

Instead he is set to play in the Premier League with Sunderland, who are offering Europa League football, a guaranteed two-year contract and higher wages than Valencia’s terms.

Until Sunderland entered the race, everything appeared on track. He also had interest from another LaLiga side, Hull City and Belgian clubs Anderlecht and Antwerp.

Valencia, caught short in a priority position, moved swiftly to reopen talks for Andrés García, long on their list. The former Levante player rejected them and chose Getafe under José Bordalás.

The club are now evaluating further options to strengthen the role before the window shuts.
