Sunderland close on Thomas Meunier with medical booked after two-year deal agreed | OneFootball

Sunderland are close to a transfer breakthrough this summer, with Belgium international Thomas Meunier due on Wearside for a medical.

A two-year deal has been agreed with the 34-year-old right-back, who is expected in the city today. Provided there are no late issues, he is expected to sign within 24 hours. The Athletic first reported he flew into Newcastle on Tuesday morning to complete formalities.

Meunier is available on a free after his Lille contract expired, having spent 2025-26 with the French club. His arrival would be the first senior addition and bolster Régis Le Bris’ squad before their return to European football.

His career includes Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Club Brugge, Trabzonspor and Lille. He has Champions League experience and more than 60 Belgium caps.

Trai Hume and Nordi Mukiele are established options on Sunderland’s right, and Hume has also featured higher up. Meunier would give Le Bris an experienced, tactically flexible alternative.

A successful medical is the final major hurdle before completion and announcement. Sunderland hope to move quickly as preparations continue for the opening pre-season friendly at York City.
