Crystal Palace have been handed encouraging news regarding Marc Guehi’s injury, with England manager Thomas Tuchel confirming the defender has suffered “no structural damage” to his foot. The update offers reassurance for both club and country after initial fears that the centre-back could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Guehi sustained the injury during Palace’s 3-1 Conference League victory over AZ Alkmaar last week, in an incident late in the match that saw him booked. While he was forced to miss the 0-0 draw with Brighton, early medical reports have eased concerns.
Tuchel explained that the 24-year-old will miss England’s World Cup qualifier against Serbia on Thursday but could return for the final match of the international break against Albania in Tirana on Sunday. “With Marc it is very painful but there is no structural damage so it is all about the pain. There is a possibility that overnight from one day to the next that we have a significant improvement,” said Tuchel.

The Crystal Palace defender has become a vital figure for both his club and the national team. His composure on the ball and organisational skills have seen him emerge as one of the Premier League’s most consistent centre-backs. For England, Tuchel acknowledged his leadership qualities and influence within the squad, adding: “It is nice. He wants to stay with us and we wanted him to stay close. He is one of the leaders, he is an important member of the team, he is an important glue between many players and it is nice to see.”
Tuchel also highlighted the ongoing daily assessments of Guehi’s recovery, noting that the player’s determination to feature in the second qualifier remains strong. “He tries everything to be included in the second match and we wanted to have the opportunity, that is why we assess him every day.”
Palace manager Oliver Glasner revealed at the weekend that Guehi “can’t even walk”, but the England update now provides optimism that the injury may not keep him out for long. Palace face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on 22 November, and his return would be a timely boost as the Eagles seek to strengthen their league position.
Guehi’s defensive reliability has been central to Palace’s structure this season. With a busy winter schedule ahead, his availability could prove crucial in maintaining the team’s balance and resilience. For both Tuchel and Glasner, ensuring the player’s full recovery remains the priority, but the absence of structural damage means confidence will grow around his swift return.
